True Customer Service
Just today I received a pointless marketing email from Virgin wines, wishing me a merry Xmas and encouraging me to get orders in early etc etc. Nothing remarkable there, but there's a fantastically bizarre post script, which demonstrates exactly how seriously they take their customers' stated preferences :
"PS - Currently you have chosen not to receive wine marketing emails from us. If you wish to continue not receiving information about special offers and discounts you don't have to do anything. If, however, you would like the opportunity to get the very best deals from Virgin Wines just reply to this email and we will add you to our mailing list. We don't pass your details on to any third party, so you won't suddenly be bombarded with offers from companies you've never heard of. And, of course, you can ask to be taken off the list at any time."
Which is an extraordinarily effective Catch-22. It seems to translate as :
"We've received your request not to be bombarded with offers, but are ignoring it. If you don't reply we may continue to do so. If you do reply, we take it as a signal you want to be on our mailing list, so you'll probably get more of them. Of course, you remain in total control at all times".
Any suggestions how best to deal with this ?
